I have HP LaserJet printer that was working great with my old computer. Now I got a new computer with Windows 10 64 bit OS and I cannot find a driver for the printer to work. The display on the printer says “Receiving data” but nothing prints. Could you please suggest what to do?

EDIT: also some printers provide an ’emulation’ mode for compatibility. I found this out by poking buttons on my last printer and getting it to print out one of its self reports, which listed the exact model it happily emulates.

My test bench computer has HP software for a printer but no printer as this puppy is a dumpster find. It works fine for logging data but every 2 days or so a HP advertisement pops up asking this or that. It is annoying when accessing the computer remotely through Team Viewer as the HP advertisement is in the way.

How could a fine company like HP allow this? I uninstalled the HP software but the AD still pops up? It gets worse. The HP printer at the office stopped working one day. I went through the usual list , no paper , cable unplugged , host computer off.

Everything seemed okay and I could ping the host computer? Why was this HP printer not working? I took a second look at the printer and found the problem after accidentally bumping the mouse.

Bumping the mouse on the host computer caused the monitor to wake up and there was my problem. A big advertisement by HP saying I should buy my printer paper from so and so. Take your new cable, plug the parallel end into the printer.

After I did this, the data light illuminated and the display kept alternating from Ready to Data Received. You will NOT get any notification of hardware detected on the Win 10 home screen. Be patient and Wait. Eventually, the printer will show up. Print a test page. It works. It will be checked automatically under Ports in Printer Properties. You will not be using LPT1.

This is the only difference between my failure and success. The HP universal print drivers that Win 10 installs are fine. This is exactly how it worked for me. Easiest fix ever and I got my sanity back. This may very well work with other printers besides the that are older and have parallel connections.

Check your HP printer to make sure the parallel connector is the same as mine. I do not have pins to connect but rather metal contacts. Confirm this on yours. Good luck and I’ll check posts periodically to see how this is working for users and to answer any questions if you have problems.
